Escuchar con los ojos is the result of over two decades of collaboration between renowned photographer Stephen Ferry and the Arhuaco collective Realizaciones Yosokwi, directed by Amado Villafaña. The book focuses on the ongoing resistance of the Kogui, Arhuaco, Wiwa, and Kankuamo peoples of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in the face of severe threats to their culture and territory.
The book is comprised of 93 photographs taken by Stephen Ferry and members of the Yosokwi collective, two archival photographs, two maps, and an engraving by Theodore de Bry. Featuring a foreword by Arhuaco leader Margarita Villafaña, it contains extensive texts that provide historical context to the images. Through personal reflections, these texts also ponder the challenges of intercultural communication and the importance of building bridges between the ancestral worldview of nature and the concepts of the majority society outside the mountain range. The bookmarks were hand-spun by Ati Awisama, an Arhuaco elder (mayor), so that her thought may sustain the volume. The front and back covers are embossed with a diagram of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta from an ancestral perspective, the result of months of consultation with Arhuaco mamᵾ Kunchanawingᵾmᵾ Márquez, who serves as the spiritual guide of the project.
In 2023, Stephen Ferry and Amado Villafaña were named National Geographic Society Explorers, which supports the publication of this book.
